Not sure which siding material is right for your home? Here’s a breakdown of the four options we install, what each one does best, and who it’s a good fit for.
The most popular siding choice in Minnesota — and for good reason. Vinyl is affordable, low-maintenance, and available in a wide range of colors and profiles to match virtually any home style. It won’t rot, peel, or need repainting, and it holds up well against moisture and moderate impacts.
Best for: Homeowners looking for a cost-effective, low-maintenance exterior upgrade with solid weather protection and great curb appeal.
Maintenance: Occasional wash with a garden hose. No painting, staining, or sealing required.
Lifespan: 20–40 years depending on quality and installation.
Composite siding is engineered from a blend of materials — typically wood fibers and resins — designed to look like real wood without the upkeep. It holds its color longer than natural wood, resists warping and cracking, and performs well in temperature extremes — which matters in Minnesota.
Best for: Homeowners who want the warm, natural look of wood but don’t want to deal with annual staining, sealing, or rot repairs.
Maintenance: Minimal — no staining or sealing. Occasional cleaning keeps it looking fresh.
Lifespan: 25–50 years depending on the product and manufacturer.
Steel is the toughest siding option we offer. Heavy-gauge steel panels resist hail, flying debris, and extreme wind better than any other material on this list. The finish is baked on at the factory, so it won’t chip, fade, or peel the way painted wood does. It’s a premium product with a premium lifespan.
Best for: Homeowners in hail-prone areas (like much of the Twin Cities metro), or anyone who wants a modern, industrial look with decades of zero-maintenance performance.
Maintenance: Virtually none. Steel doesn’t rot, warp, or attract pests.
Lifespan: 40–70 years. Most manufacturers offer 40+ year warranties.
LP SmartSide is engineered wood siding treated with the brand’s proprietary SmartGuard process, which protects against moisture, fungal decay, and termites. It looks and feels like real wood — because it is real wood — but with engineered durability that natural cedar or pine simply can’t match in Minnesota’s climate.
Best for: Homeowners who want authentic wood aesthetics with substantially better weather and pest resistance than traditional wood siding.
Maintenance: Requires painting or staining every 5–10 years (similar to natural wood, but with significantly better durability between coats).
Lifespan: 25–50 years with proper maintenance. Backed by LP’s 5/50 Year Limited Warranty.
Siding Comparison
Choosing siding comes down to three things: your budget, how much maintenance you’re willing to do, and the look you want. Here’s the quick version:
The longest lifespan, the best hail resistance, the least maintenance of any option.
Composite is lower-maintenance; LP SmartSide is closer to real wood in feel and appearance.
Four steps, no surprises.
We visit your home (typically within 24–48 hours of your request), inspect the existing siding, and document any damage or wear. If you’ve had storm damage, we photograph everything for your insurance claim.
We walk you through what we found, show you photos, and discuss your options — repair vs. full replacement, material choices, colors, and budget considerations.
Transparent Proposal
You get a written proposal with a clear scope of work, material specs, project timeline, and total cost. No vague estimates, no hidden fees, no surprises at the end.
Our crew installs your siding to manufacturer specifications. We protect your landscaping, do a full cleanup including a magnetic nail sweep, and walk you through the finished work. You receive a written warranty before we leave.
CLIENT CARE
Whether you’re dealing with storm damage, aging siding that’s ready to be replaced, or you’re just exploring options for a future project — give us a call. We’ll give you a straight answer and an honest assessment. No sales pitch, no obligation.
When we’re already working on your home’s exterior, it’s often the most cost-effective time to address other areas too. Here are the services our siding customers most commonly bundle:
If your siding was damaged by hail or wind, your roof and gutters likely were too. We inspect everything and handle the full insurance claim.
Replacing siding is the ideal time to upgrade to energy-efficient windows. We can coordinate both projects to save time and reduce installation costs.
New siding paired with seamless gutters gives your home complete exterior protection and a clean, finished look.
If moisture or drafts were getting past your old siding, your insulation may have taken damage too.
Siding FAQs
The cost depends on your home’s size, the material you choose, and how much prep work is needed (removing old siding, repairing sheathing, etc.). Vinyl is the most affordable option; steel is the most expensive. We offer free estimates so you can get an exact number for your home — and we have 0% financing available for qualified homeowners.
If your siding was damaged by a covered event — typically hail, wind, or a fallen tree — your homeowner’s insurance usually covers the cost of repair or replacement minus your deductible. We work with all major insurance carriers and can walk you through the claims process start to finish.
Most residential siding projects take 3–7 days depending on the size of the home and weather conditions. We’ll give you a specific timeline in your proposal and keep you updated throughout.
In some cases, yes — but we don’t recommend it. Installing over old siding can hide moisture damage, rot, or insulation problems underneath. We typically recommend a full tear-off so we can inspect and repair the sheathing before installing new material. It costs a bit more upfront, but it protects your investment long-term.
All four materials we install hold up well in Minnesota. Steel offers the best hail and impact resistance. Vinyl is the most cost-effective all-around performer. Composite and LP SmartSide give you a wood look with engineered durability. The right choice depends on your budget, your home’s exposure, and your aesthetic preferences — we help you figure that out during the free consultation.
